The original complex of castle, gardens, domestic buildings, churches and churchyard can still be made out. The castle was built between 1693 and 1700 for Hans Georg von der Marwitz, a ‘Hofmarschall’ (chief steward) of Frederick I, possibly to plans by the architect Cornelius Ryckwaert. His grandson sold the Baroque castle to the Prussian Minister of State Johann Christoph von Wöllner. As advisor to King William II, he exerted considerable influence and was the author of the Religious Edict of 1788. In Groß Rietz, he dedicated himself to economic and ecological developments in agriculture. In 1861, the estate and castle returned to the ownership of the von der Marwitz family, where it remained until it was confiscated in 1945.

Today, the castle is owned by Brandenburgische Schlössergesellschaft and is privately rented. The castle can only be viewed from outside.
