During the 18th century, the Kingdom of Prussia strived to integrate Beeskow into its administration and reshape the town, which was historically part of Lower Lusatia. This went hand in hand with the structural redevelopment of the town. The royal urban development measures often led to conflicts and disputes between the magistrate, the townspeople and the authorities.

Beeskow - a garrison town

As a garrison town, Beeskow took in soldiers and horses and the municipal trades provided supplies for the military. Austrian troops were stationed in and around Beeskow during the Seven Years’ War (1756-63). The town paid to keep the damage to a minimum and to prevent Russian troops from passing through the town. In 1786, Frederick II gave the town 3,028 taler silver coins to improve cloth production.

History to be admired

Visitors today can still recognise the alterations made during the time of Frederick the Great. The historic town centre, St. Marienkirche church towering above everything else, Beeskow Castle, the lovingly renovated houses and the almost completely preserved town wall give Beeskow its special character and invite visitors to explore the exciting history of this small town.
