This lock connects the summit level of the Oder-Spree Canal via Lake Wergensee with the River Spree and is operated on the spot.  A new lock was built in Neuhaus in 1892, a year after the opening of the Oder-Spree Canal. The pumping station right next to the lock was built at the same time. The bascule bridge in the upper water is operated by lock personnel for boats moving out into the upper water.
