Theater am Rand is located far from the big cities on the eastern edge of Germany – in the former marshlands of Oderbruch in the village Zollbrücke. The striking landscape here dictates the rules of the game: simplicity, professionalism and a hand-made theatre that has been rebuilt several times. The protagonists and managers are accordionist Tobias Morgenstern and actor Thomas Rühmann, who pursue various projects here.

When they started in 1998, the facility essentially consisted of a living room for 32 spectators in a hundred-year-old half-timbered house. In spring 2006 the only space left was in a field. A new building was constructed, its protective roof supported by peeled oak trunks. The slant of the structure, its open character and the absence of right angles ties in with the aesthetics of the stories told here, and it reflects a symbiosis between resilient nature and art. The landscape, wind and weather, evening sun and 160-180 spectators – all of this is brought into the structure. Eloquent human stories are told about the world and its regions.
