On October 18, 1887, the foundation stone was laid at Große Tränke for the construction of the Oder-Spree Canal. The 87.7 kilometre canal was opened in 1891. The Große Tränke lock, with a usable length of 55 metres, was intended to allow towed shipping to use the Wernsdorf-Große Tränke section in the event of a strong channel flow along the River Spree. The weir in the River Müggelspree kept the Große Tränke-Fürstenwalde section navigable if the River Spree was running low. A second lock was built next to the first in 1904. This resulted in a further increase in shipping. In 1929, the mitre gates in the lower head of the South Lock were replaced by a lifting gate; after this, the usable length was 67.50 metres.

The system ceased operation in the 1950s. Although the water level was balanced and the lock gates were open all year round, the ships had to navigate through the North chamber, which was only 9.60 metres wide. In 2004, the lock system, which had long been superfluous, and the desolate lock bridge were dismantled to make shipping easier. Now, a new bridge without disruptive pillars spans the 40-metre-wide opening for shipping. In December 1997, a new weir with three weir sections and a boat hoist for muscle-operated sports boats were taken into operation.

In 2007, the WLV Untere Spree (Association for the Protection of Waterways and Landscapes in the Lower Spree) built a fish passage around the weir to allow migrating fish to reach spawning and feeding grounds.
