In the Innerer Spreewald nature reserve there are large areas of wetland meadow and shallow water. With a little luck, cranes can be observed breeding and rearing their young here (from March to June) and in autumn they can be seen resting. The observation tower is located directly on the Buchenhain Nature Trail, which leads through one of the most species-rich mixed forest areas in Brandenburg. The forest is the habitat of middle spotted woodpeckers, red-breasted flycatchers and orioles – these can also be seen with a little luck. In the wetlands and shallow water areas there are various waders and water birds to be observed. White and black storks, sea eagles and Nordic geese are also easy to spot.

Tip:

The best times of the day to observe cranes are morning and evening. Many other bird species such as snipes, marsh harriers and various types of warblers are also easy to spot.

How to get there:

The tower is not far from the Zerniasfließ weir. From Buchenhain car park at the western exit of the village of Schlepzig, follow the nature trail for about 300 metres.
