Only a cross on the front of the building indicates what the Catholic church of St. Josef the Worker in Peitz actually is. Behind the building and inside it, however, there is much that reveals the recent history of the region: large numbers of displaced persons from Eastern Europe came to Peitz after the end of the war. They were Catholics but could not find a place to attend church services in Brandenburg – a region that was mainly influenced by the Reformation.

In 1948, premises were initially rented in Gubener Strasse before the present church was built. It was consecrated in 1968. Since during the time of the GDR a church tower was not allowed to be higher than the roof of the church, this tower nestles closely to the building at the rear and is also the entrance to the church. The bells come from the what was once the nationally owned bell foundry in Apolda. In the entrance area there is a wood carving by Cottbus sculptor Felix Hertel dating from 1953. The sculpture of St. Mary with the child and the body of the cross in the chancel were created in 1978 and 1983 respectively by master woodcarvers Gebrüder Fromelius.

Interested visitors can obtain the key from Mr. Thielscher, Telephone: +49 35601 22 960 or the Decker family, Telephone: +49 35601 22860
