The church was probably built around 1280 as a Romanesque hall-type church. since documentary evidence indicates that the bell tower was built in 1350. The outer appearance of the church is characterised by its unhewn field stones and solid construction. Since its walls are 1.60 metres thick, it probably also served as a shelter during wartime. Inside you can admire the medieval-Gothic mural painting and the Madonna from 1420 as well as the Baroque elements and ceiling frescoes dating back to 1736.

The Marienkirche in Zaue is taking part in the “Open Church” initiative and is open to visitors daily from mid-April to the end of October. In the remaining months, the church is often open at weekends and on fine days. Visits can be arranged at any time. Current event dates can be found on the notice board in front of the church or on Twitter (www.twitter.com/KircheZaue). The key to the tour can be obtained at Zauer Dorfstrasse 5, Telephone: +49 35478-179779 or else collected from the rectory.
