The elongated church square in the centre of the country town of Lieberose bears living testimony to the complex history of this area. Here, two striking churches stand directly alongside each other: the ruins of the mighty Stadtkirche (town church), of which only the outer walls and the tower can still be seen, and the small, freshly plastered Landkirche (country church) with its slender tower. The Landkirche contains interior elements taken from the former Stadtkirche.

In 1519, members of the family of the lords of Schulenburg acquired the area and had both the castle and the church completely rebuilt in 1550. Italian master builder Thadäus Paglion was commissioned for this purpose. Under his direction, a magnificent memorial building was erected that was unique in Brandenburg. An aerial bomb destroyed the church in 1945, but essential elements were saved and it was possible to accommodate these in the small Landkirche. There is now an artistic epitaph that has been converted into an altarpiece – a testimony to Saxon sculptural art of the Renaissance.

The small Landkirche is an example of how it was not always easy for the different population groups in the region to co-exist: in 1826, when the Wends were still denied access to the Stadtkirche, the neo-Gothic hall-type structure was erected directly alongside it, replacing a previous building. Among other things it contains a baptismal font dating back to 1603 and the aforementioned epitaph for Joachim der Reiche von der Schulenburg from 1597, which was reworked into a framed altarpiece.

The Stadtkirche is taking part in the “Open Church” initiative and is open on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
