Burg im Spreewald did not have its own church until well into the 18th century. Due to the intensive settlement policy pursued by the Prussian kings, the town’s population expanded considerably. As such, there was increasing demand for the town to have its own church. A half-timbered church was first built on the site of the present church in 1753. After a fire, the simple church building that can be seen today was built at great expense in the years 1799-1804. The early Classicist nave can accommodate 2,000 people.

In the 19th century, the majority of the population was of Wendish origin and so two church services were held on Sundays, one in Wendish and one in German, until the National Socialists banned this in 1937. During the time of the GDR, the church enjoyed a lively community life despite losing members. Lots of visitors still come to admire the Wendish costumes worn by local people to church services,

especially those attended by traditionally dressed women and girls at Easter, Whitsun and on the last Sunday in August. The church is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., guided tours by appointment at the parish office
