The foundation stone for the relatively large village church in Drachhausen was laid on August 6, 1894. The new church was consecrated on December 20, 1895 – after less than 17 months of construction.

The neo-Romanesque building made of red brick masonry was built based on a cruciform ground plan. The single-bay nave and transept are vaulted, and the apse adjoins the east side of the nave. In the north-west corner between the nave and transept, the slender tower was inserted with a high pyramid-shaped spire. The tower has three bronze bells made by the Leipzig-based company Jauck in 1895. Two bells were commandeered during the war and were supplemented by two bronze bells made by Schilling in Apolda in 1925.

The interior has galleries on the west side and in the transepts. On the west gallery there is an organ made by the Eilenburg-based organ builder Conrad Geissler. The richly decorative paintings here are typical of the period. The altar, pulpit and pews survive in their original state, as do three chandeliers in the central nave. The motif window in the apse is remarkable: it was reconstructed in the 1990s based on a historical photograph. All the other stained glass windows have survived in their original state.

The village of Drachhausen was located in a so-called mining reserve until 1992: the plan was to make way for open-cast lignite mining. For this reason, little was done to preserve the church for many years. But this was also why the church was so well preserved in its original state and can now be admired as restored.
