The Wendish-German double church in Vetschau/Spreewald is unique, thanks to its two structural shells placed next to each other. The two separate parts were intended for the German and the Wendish citizens. Today’s Wendish church was built as a brick structure in 1650, on the foundations of its predecessor. The German church that was built directly next to the Wendish church was constructed between 1690 and 1694 to clarify the distinction between Wends and Germans that was made at the time.

Both churches are connected through the sacristy that is located by their eastern gables. The interior of the Wendish church was converted between 1850 and 1860. The barrel vaults and double galleries were added, and the ‘eye’ in the eastern gable, the pulpit altar and an organ were built in. The German church received a new (second) organ in 1899.

After having been closed for a long time, annual Wendish church services are now held in the Wendish part of the church once again, on Open Monument Day. In addition to further church services held in German, there are cultural events and exhibitions.
