In 1975 it was decided to create a cemetery of honour for the 207 Soviet soldiers and officers that died in the battles to free Lübben.

A 3,300 square metre plot on Friedensstrasse on the edge of the forest Lübbener Hain was selected for this purpose. The sculptor Herbert Burschick from Eisenhüttenstadt designed a memorial with a wide staircase that symbolises the killed soldiers.

The memorial was unveiled on October 7, 1976.
