Jänschwalde lignite-fired power station converts coal from the nearby Jänschwalde open-cast mine into electricity. The coal is loaded onto the wagons of the company's own railway via conveyor belts and transported by train to the power station. At full load, the power plant can process up to 80,000 tons per day. The cooling towers of the power plant are approximately 120 metres high and can be seen from miles away, along with the enormous clouds of water vapour they produce. At the foot of these towers, Peitz fishermen breed up to 200 tons of fish per year (young stock) such as eels, catfish and trout in large basins in elaborately filtered warm water.
