The Garkoschke recreation area consists of a large sand dune. Immediately after the last Ice Age, sands from the area of today's Lieberoser Heide were blown up here and deposited. The origins of the dune’s name are not known, but we do know that a certain Hans Garkoschke lived near the area in the 18th century. In the course of the construction of Jänschwalde power station, a new development area was created in Peitz in the 1970s. In order to create a subsoil suitable for construction, significant quantities of sand had to be brought in. The sand was removed from this dune area, and an idyllic bathing lake was created at the extraction point. Vegetation has since become established in most of the shore areas, so the lake now looks like entirely natural. There is a lido which is a perfect spot for a dip in the water.
