The renaissance style castle was built by Eustachius von Schlieben in 1540 and it is surrounded by a park. The ensemble that is subject to monument protection, consists of four buildings. The main building with its two-storey tower is now home to the town administration office. The adjacent cavalier house is the former district office, and it is characterised by its nine window axes and the hipped roof. The castle remise is situated a little bit apart from the other buildings. It used to be a farm and stable building, and has been home to the tourist information centre and the permanent exhibition ‘Geschichten vom Heiraten’ (‘Wedding Stories’) since 2015.

The curved imperial staircase in the courtyard leads to the knights’ hall, a baroque banquet hall that is available, in particular, for civil wedding ceremonies. In the coat of arms room next door, visitors can learn about Vetschau’s municipal coat of arms, and about the coat of arms licence that had been missing until 2005.

Please contact the tourist information centre to arrange for a visit.
