The Unterspreewald region is a paradise for water sports holidays. The side canal “Randkanal” runs past Groß Wasserburg. It connects the Unterspreewald region with the lake Köthener See and the Spree-Dahme diversion canal. The lock in Wasserburg compensates for the height difference between the water levels of these bodies of water. It is a self-service lock. Groß Wasserburg’s punting boat harbour is also a convenient place for lowering paddle boats into the water.
Location: Randkanal in Groß Wasserburg
There are numerous differences in height level to be overcome in the canals and rivers between Cottbus in the Oberspreewald and Schlepzig in the Unterspreewald region. Assistance is provided by more than 60 self-service locks. Detailed instructions for lock operation can usually be found directly at each lock. The tradition of the “lock penny” is still maintained here: Children and youngsters frequently carry out the lock operation, reciting a saying as they do so. The “lock penny” is a small (voluntary) tip (about Euro 0.50 to Euro 1 per person in the boat).
