There are numerous differences in height level to be overcome in the canals and rivers between Cottbus in the Oberspreewald and Schlepzig in the Unterspreewald. Assistance is provided by more than 60 self-service locks. Detailed instructions for sluicing are usually to be found directly at each lock. The tradition of the Schleusengroschen (“lock penny”) is still maintained here:
children and youngsters frequently carry out the sluicing, reciting a saying as they do so.
The “lock penny” (Schleusengroschen) is a small (voluntary) tip (about 0.50 Euro to 1 Euro per person in the boat).
