At its core, the town church of Schwedt is a simple granite hall structure. It was built in the 13th century. On the Merian carving from 1652, it is referred to as a cruciform church. The church burned out in 1887. It was reconstructed in 1889 under the supervision of the royal architect Ludwig Dihm. The interior was enlarged, and the original building structure was completely disfigured as a result.

On April 18, 1945 the town church burned out and only the enclosing walls remained. Part of the vaults and the three steel bells from 1921 could be saved. The Renaissance altar and pulpit from 1580 that had been a present from the Hohenstein family and the epitaphs from around 1600 were lost. When the church was rebuilt in 1950, a viewing platform was installed on the steeple, allowing for great views of the surrounding region.

Visitors are welcome to visit the church at the regular opening hours and for exhibitions. Visits to the steeple can be booked at the tourist information centre.
