“With its mighty St Mary's Church, the monastery, the magazine and its overall appearance, Randemünde resembled a metropolis.” This is how Ehm Welk described the 775-year-old town Angermünde in his novel “The Heathens of Kummerow” in 1937. Walking through the historic centre, you will see freshly refurbished half-timbered houses, tiny alleyways, romantic courtyards, the market square with the town hall and walk-on fountain, restaurants and cafés, lots of art and of course the Ehm Welk and local history museum. The novel “The Heathens of Kummerow” is set in Ehm Welk’s birth place, the little village Biesenbrow in the Uckermark. His stories about the cowherd Krischan, pastor Breithaupt and heathen traditions are inspired by his childhood experiences. When visiting this area nowadays, you can still feel a hint of Ehm Welk’s stories. Little villages, gentle hills, grain fields dotted with red poppies, shaded forests and clear lakes: Visitors to the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve will experience unspoilt nature. Cyclists and hikers will get their money’s worth thanks to routes such as the “Märkisch Overland Trail” and the “Uckermark Circular Cycle Route”.
