On tour with a handbike - travelling along the river Elbe

This handbike tour tip takes you to the far Northwest of Brandenburg, to Prignitz-Region. The flat and wide landscape between the Elbe and the mouth of the river, between the towns of Lenzen and Dömitz, where Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony meet, is called Lenzerwische. Nothing here today reminds of the former barrier fences of the inner-German border that ran through this area. The only relic of this time is the former border tower.

The 27-kilometre, leisurely cycle tour starts and ends in the tranquil town of Lenzen. At the beginning, it is worth visiting the BUND visitor centre of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve River Elbe Landscape in Lenzen Castle. Guest will not only find lots of information about the history, but also about the flora and fauna of this special natural reserve area. The first few kilometres are easy to cycle on the well-developed Elbe cycle path, which runs along the Elbe embankment. At Wootz, the route then turns off into the dyke hinterland and leads past meadows and fields to the river Löcknitz. Along the way are small Wischedörfer villages with their Lower Saxony houses and farms.

Back at the starting point in Lenzen, you can enjoy a tasty and healthy snack at the ahead burghotel. The restaurant is specialised in vegan food and also invites non-vegans to try out the benefits of a consistently plant-based diet. Barrier-free rooms are available in the hotel for overnight stays. Of course, there is much more to discover in the Prignitz region.

Highlights along the tour

Lenzerwische - a romantic landscape between the Elbe and Eldemündung estuaries

Today, there are hardly any reminders of the former border fortifications in the quiet Lenzerwische. The area is peaceful - and yet history meets nature here: The small Prignitz town of Lenzen is home to two impressive viewpoints that are separated by centuries. Lenzen Castle dates back to the 13th century and is now home to a hotel and an exhibition worth seeing. Just one kilometre away is a former border watchtower on the Elbe cycle path - a relic from the time of German division, built just a few decades ago.

Where soldiers once guarded the inner-German border, cyclists can now enjoy a carefree view across the Elbe floodplain to Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and even Mecklenburg. Along the route, there is nothing left of the former barrier fences. Nature has long since reclaimed the area - and continues to surprise visitors with its beauty.
