There aren’t many towns in Germany that can look back on a history as long and varied as that of Brandenburg an der Havel. The spectacular Old Town, New Town and Cathedral Island still bear witness to it to this day. The town is considered the cradle of the Mark Brandenburg region and in many places resembles a kind of ‘Little Venice’, traversed by the Lower Havel and the town canal, as well as an array of tributaries including the Näthewinde and the Domstreng.

Yet Brandenburg an der Havel was also an important industrial town until the fall of the GDR, or East Germany, a history that can still be seen to this day in many places, whether in its former factory buildings and shipyard facilities or in the old bridges that now form the backdrop for films. One of these bridges on the River Havel is located in the town district of Plaue. Several scenes from the 2014 film ‘Phoenix’ were shot there and in the neighbouring Palace Park. The film by director Christian Petzold tells the story of a woman who returns from the concentration camp Auschwitz to search for her husband in post-war Germany. Nina Hoss and Ronald Zehrfeld play the lead roles.

Three years earlier, the head office of the former powder factory in the Brandenburg town district of Kirchmöser was the setting for the film ‘Barbara’, about an East German doctor (played by Nina Hoss) who applies to emigrate to the West and is punished by being transferred from Berlin to a clinic in the sticks.
