On the way to the Wähnert Apple Farm in Hoppenrade north of Berlin, you pass Susann and Stefan Wähnert’s meadow orchard. Apples grow on almost half of the ten hectare farm, 400 of which were planted by the owner’s grandfather in the 50s, with a further 100 newly planted fruit trees. In addition to a few peach, plum and pear trees, the business focuses on apple tress, with 45 varieties in total.

Unique quality of the fruit

The Wähnerts bring a lot of enthusiasm and dedication to their work on the organic farm, and Stefan Wähnert is actually a full-time fire fighter. So it is Susann Wähnert, an agricultural studies graduate, who primarily runs the operation. Visitors are impressed by the unique quality of their fruit during tastings, which benefits everyone. Because here, apples still taste like apples.

A large range of apples

Most of the customers travel to Hoppenrade specifically for the large selection available there –  White Transparents, Gravensteiner, Geheimrat Dr. Oldenburg, Cox’s Orange Pippins and Kaiser Wilhelms are just a few of the varieties. The wide range makes it possible to have apples ripe for eating at any time of year. So the Wähnerts agree with the writer Ries and his praise of apples: “Apples are the best food, for at home, when travelling, for the old, for children, for summer, for winter”.

Recreational activities on the farm

City families with children in particular enjoy a visit to the apple farm, as the idyllic countryside with lots of different types of poultry and woolly sheep grazing among the apple trees are well worth seeing. For anyone who feels so good there that they want to stay a bit longer, the “Apfelhaus” (Apple House) with its two comfortable holiday apartments is just a few minutes away on foot. In the immediate vicinity of Hoppenrade Castle, you can head off on lots of different days out. And right in front of the holiday home, there is an apple tree of course.

Product range

Meat, sausage, cheese, poultry, eggs, fruit, vegetables, honey, herbs, bread and baked goods, juices, ornamental plants/nursery saplings; part of the farm shop is a countrywomen’s shop with rustic paintings, socks, crochet work and pot holders

Guided tours

Tours of the farm are gladly given subject to pre-booking. Wähnert Apple Farm offers fruit tree pruning courses at the end of February.
