There are only two certified organic rose nurseries in Germany. One of them is Andrea Genschorek's Bioland-Rosenschule Uckermark in Radekow in Brandenburg. There, near the state border to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Genschorek family bought a former farmstead and thoroughly modernised it.

Turning a passion into a vocation

When she created the garden, Andrea Genschorek searched for the perfect heritage rose, but she did not find one. That's when she had the brilliant idea of turning her passion for the most beautiful of all flowers into her vocation. She acquired the necessary expertise and in 2009 she set up her own rose nursery.

Breeding expert

She knows all the sensitivities of the conventional breeds and therefore focuses on particularly robust and resilient varieties. Her heritage roses, ramblers, climbing roses and near-natural wild roses and hybrids grow without any synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. They grow in the open air with natural plant fortifiers and beneficial animals – even amateur gardeners know how useful nettle broth and ladybirds are.

The green field

Here, some 18,000 fragrant dream flowers grow on six hectares of land. And because the ground is covered with nurse crop and mulch, the field is called "grüner Acker", green field. All around the field, horses in open stables produce the excellent rose fertilizer, and there are lovingly designed show gardens in the entrance area. The gardens are the shop windows and serve visitors as inspiration. On request, Andrea Genschorek is always happy to show people around and explain how she breeds and grafts roses, processes that are very labour-intensive.

Large product range

During the season from March to December, the 200 varieties are sold at the farm on Fridays and Saturdays as well as online. Andrea Genschorek also attends many markets and festivals, and she sells her roses through other organic businesses, such as the farm shop in the Brodowin ecovillage. Her services also include grafting to order and she sells freshly harvested rose petals for producers of syrup, liqueur and tea.

Celebrations

The sky-blue gate is open outside the usual opening hours during two event highlights for gardening enthusiasts: the Rosenblütenfest (rose blossom festival) in June and the Tag der offenen Gärten (open garden day) in September. Visitors can stroll through the show gardens, walk around the pond and of course marvel at the many rose varieties. The rose cake alone is worth a visit. But you can burn the off the calories in no time – the Oder-Neiße cycle path is only three kilometres away from the Bioland Rosenschule Uckermark .
